In Quarantine? Pick Up One of These Hobbies!

Folks everywhere are starting to take up new hobbies to fill their days and take their minds off of COVID-19. Here are some fun hobbies to consider while you’re stuck in quarantine.

This week, the Datum blog is back with another guide to help you relax and stay calm during the COVID-19 pandemic. While we typically publish content related to Datum’s fully-customizable aluminum canopies, we are taking the time this week to help you expand your horizons — while safely in quarantine, of course. Folks everywhere are starting to take up new hobbies to fill their days and take their minds off of COVID-19. While you should certainly avoid the pressure to be unreasonably productive during this quarantine, there are quite a few fun and relaxing hobbies that can enhance the time you spend at home over the coming weeks.

Learn to Cook or Bake

While many of us are limiting our trips to grocery stores, those of us with a suitable stock of ingredients at home can spend some time learning to cook or bake. With a decent supply of flour, sugar, and a few other everyday ingredients, you can learn to bake your own bread, cakes, and pastries at home. There are plenty of recipes and tutorials available online. If you are missing ingredients but would still like to learn more about the culinary arts, you can start a journal of recipes and techniques you would like to try in the future!

Spend Some Time Gardening

Spending all day indoors can be frustrating for anyone, especially when it’s done for weeks at a time. Gardening in your backyard or on your patio, balcony, or window sill can be an incredibly rewarding activity that is easy to accomplish while practicing social distancing. If you do not have space to plant things outdoors or you lack supplies, take the time to learn more about which plants you like and plan a garden for later. Cultivating houseplants can be incredibly rewarding, too!

Learn a New Language or Skill

Thanks to the internet, anyone can learn virtually any skill from the comfort of their own home. Consider learning a new language online — some sites even give you the ability to practice your new language by conversing with a native speaker. Many universities are also making their courses available online. You can learn about anything from mathematics and chemistry to film history and anthropology. Think about what you would like to learn, then log on and get cracking!

Explore the Arts

There are plenty of artistic hobbies that can be done with items you have lying around your home. You can learn to draw with just paper, a pen or pencil, and dedication. You can try taking up sewing or knitting with a few basic supplies, and old clothes or sheets can make for a great upcycling project. You can even turn plastic bags into plastic yarn with a bit of clever cutting. Anything can be an art project waiting to happen!
